This mandala is a gift for a teacher of mine who teaches martial arts. I figure so much of his interest lies in Japanese culture why not create a mandala, that, from a distance, looks like the Japanese flag.

Some of the designs on this drawing come directly from Japanese art, like the weave pattern and alternating triple circles around the outer perimeter. The oak leaves symbolize strength, strong roots, longevity. The yin-yangs throughout denote balance. The budding flowers (hard to make out from this image) for new opportunities. The origami crane for good fortune and peace. The triangle, circle, and square are the 'building blocks of the universe.'

This is beautiful! I love your clever design... it really does look like the Japanese flag from a distance and all the details you've included are so perfect. :) I'm sure that he'll love it.

Also, *thank you* for including the link to your in progress photos... I wanted to ask: Did you erase the pencil as you finished inking sections? And do you have a recommendations for getting the measurements just right? I know that a ruler is the obvious answer, but I know that sometimes just using a regular ruler isn't quite as precise as a project like this might require, so I thought I'd ask (at risk of showing my blonde). :aww:

Anyway! AMAZING work and thank you so much for sharing. Oh... and Huzzah for Precise V5 Pens! I adore them. ^.^
